Niantic AR Voyage

Nexus Studios · Oct 2020 – Jun 2021 (9 months) · Freelance · Los Angeles, Remote

Collaborated with award-winning film and experience design studio Nexus Studios on developing a series of open-source AR mini-games to demonstrate Niantic Lightship ARDK capabilities in a fun and playful way.

The demos focus on real-time mapping, shared multiplayer experiences, semantic segmentation, and depth estimation.
I focused on the implementation of networking capabilities and multiplayer gameplay.

The prototype was revealed at the AWE conference, where Niantic took center stage as the winner of the “Best In Show in AR” Auggie Award, with the Lightship ARDK.

Before this, Nexus Studios had been selected to participate in the Early Explorers program, to experiment with an early unreleased version of the ARKD and provide insight into XR developers’ needs.

Inspired by the newly enforced lockdown reality brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic we developed a hot potato-style multiplayer AR game where players can find neutrinos in their own homes, using a scanner, and send them to another player's home, at a location of their choice, while viewing the player's whereabouts.

This was developed in a fast-paced environment, with a team of two Unity developers and a Creative Technologist, where everyone played an integral part in all aspects of the gameplay.

A capture of the full gameplay can be viewed here.
